Lumi Family Sharing: Budget as a Couple on One Premium Plan

Family Sharing is Lumi's way of letting two people run one budget on a single Premium plan — for less than the cost of two separate subscriptions. You and your partner sign in with the same account, each set your own name in Settings, and every expense or income logged from then on carries that name automatically. No merged bank accounts, no separate spreadsheets, no "did you see how much we spent on groceries?" texts. Just one shared picture, with each entry attributed to whoever added it — and an optional notification the moment your partner logs something.

What is Family Sharing?

Family Sharing lets two people use one Lumi Premium account as a shared budget. There's no separate sign-in to accept or second account to manage — you both log in with the same credentials. The only setup is that each person sets their own name in Settings, once, on their own phone. From that point on, Lumi remembers which name is attached to the device that's logged in, and stamps it on every expense or income that device adds. Both of you keep scanning receipts, logging by voice, or importing Apple Pay purchases exactly as before.

How it works

  • One account, two names. You and your partner both sign in with the same Lumi login. Each person opens Settings on their own phone and sets their own name — that's the entire setup.
  • Every transaction is tagged with who added it. Open the transaction list and each expense or income shows its author's name — so "who spent what" is answered by looking, not asking.
  • Optional notifications when your partner logs something. Turn on notifications in Settings and get pinged the moment your partner adds an expense or income — you see it as it happens, not at the end of the month.
  • Shared goals and budgets stay in sync. Category budgets, savings goals, and the monthly forecast reflect both partners' activity in real time, on either person's phone or the web dashboard.
  • No bank credentials change hands. Same as solo Lumi, nothing gets linked to a bank aggregator — you both log purchases directly, by voice, receipt scan, or Apple Pay auto-import.

Why budgeting together tends to work better

Two people watching the same numbers catch problems faster than one person watching alone, and neither partner has to reconstruct the month from memory at review time. Based on Lumi's own internal estimates — illustrative figures, not peer-reviewed research — couples who share a budget report:

  • +20% higher odds of hitting a savings goal together than budgeting solo.
  • faster progress toward a shared goal, since both partners are contributing and can see it moving.
  • 68% say they have fewer arguments about money once every transaction is visible and attributed.
  • 5 minutes is roughly how long it takes to set up Family Sharing and get a partner logging their first expense.

Take those as directional, not a guarantee — the real driver is visibility: when every purchase is attributed instead of anonymous, "who spent what" stops being a monthly argument and becomes a line you can just read.

Setting up Family Sharing

  1. Open Settings in the Lumi app and set your name — this is what will appear on every transaction you add.
  2. Share your login (email and password) with your partner so they can sign in on their own phone.
  3. Your partner opens Settings on their phone and sets their own name.
  4. Optional: turn on notifications in Settings so you're pinged whenever the other person logs an expense or income.
  5. Review together monthly: because every entry is attributed, the conversation is "here's what we spent," not "wait, was that you or me?"

Family Sharing vs. two separate subscriptions

Without Family Sharing, a couple who both want Premium features — AI forecast, unlimited scans, advanced analytics — pays for two full subscriptions and still keeps two separate, unsynced budgets. With Family Sharing, you both simply sign in to the same account: one subscription, one shared budget, and each person's name attached to what they log — at a lower cost than running two accounts side by side.

FAQ

What is Lumi Family Sharing?

A Premium plan feature that lets two people share one Lumi account and one budget. Each person signs in with the same login and sets their own name in Settings, and every transaction they add is tagged with that name.

Does Family Sharing cost more than a solo Premium plan?

It costs less than two separate Premium subscriptions, since both partners share one account and one plan instead of paying individually.

Can I see who added each transaction?

Yes — that's the core of Family Sharing. Every expense and income in the shared budget shows the name of whoever logged it, so you always know who spent what without asking.

How do I know when my partner logs an expense or income?

Turn on notifications in Settings. Once enabled, you get a notification the moment your partner adds a transaction, instead of finding out at the monthly review.

Do we need to merge bank accounts to use Family Sharing?

No. Family Sharing shares the Lumi budget itself, not your bank accounts. Neither partner hands over bank credentials — purchases are logged directly by voice, receipt scan, or Apple Pay import.

How long does it take to set up?

A few minutes: set your name in Settings, share your login with your partner, and have them set their own name on their phone.
