Money Milestones by Age: The Checklist for 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50

money milestones by agefinancial milestonesfinancial checklist by agesavings goals by agepersonal finance timeline

The financial milestones that matter, by age: a funded emergency habit by 25, 1x your salary by 30, 2x by 35, 3x by 40, 4x by 45, 6x by 50 — plus the unglamorous ones (credit, insurance, beneficiaries) that the savings-only lists skip. Use this as the map; each checkpoint links to its full guide.

The milestone table

AgeSavings checkpointThe other milestone
25$1,000+ emergency fund, ~0.5x salaryCredit score built; 401(k) match captured
301x salary3–6 month emergency fund; high-interest debt gone
352x salaryTerm life + disability insurance if anyone depends on you
403x salaryWill + beneficiaries current; college vs retirement order set
454x salaryRetirement date modeled with real numbers
506x salaryCatch-up contributions started the year they unlock

Salary multiples are Fidelity's guideline; the median household trails every row (actual averages by age) — the table is a compass, not a verdict.

How to read this if you're behind

Almost everyone is. The milestones compound forward: hitting 1x late at 33 still puts 2x-by-38 in reach, because each checkpoint mostly funds the next. What doesn't work is skipping the mechanics: automatic saving (pay yourself first), a real emergency floor (calculator), and knowing your actual numbers. That last one is the universal prerequisite — every decade guide in this series (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s) starts with a tracked month, because you can't redirect money you can't see. Lumi makes the tracked month survivable: voice logging, automatic Apple Pay import, receipt scanning — seconds a day instead of a spreadsheet evening.

The milestones nobody lists

Between the savings rows live the boring ones that prevent catastrophes: renters/home insurance actually adequate (check at 30), disability insurance before 35 (your income is your biggest asset), an estate basics pass at 40 (will, guardianship, beneficiaries — an afternoon, not a law degree), long-term-care conversation with your own parents by 45, and a written retirement spending number by 50 (the rehearsal).

FAQ

Which milestone matters most? The emergency fund. Every later milestone survives a job loss or medical bill only if the floor holds — why it comes first.

Are the salary multiples realistic? As averages of actual behavior, no — medians run far below. As targets that make 67 comfortable, yes. Split the difference: match the slope even if your level lags.

Where do I start if I'm at zero at 35 or 45? The decade guide for your age (35 →, 45 →) plus the beginner's budget — the sequence is identical at any age; only the urgency differs.
